1906

Pure Food and Drug Act labels Cannabis (along with all narcotics) a poison

1937

The Marijuana Tax Act makes possession and transfer of marijuana (except for medical purposes) illegal; it also places an excise tax on medical marijuana

1952

The beginning of mandatory sentencing of a minimum of 2-10 years in prison and a fine up to $20,000 for first time possession offense of marijuana (without medical permission); Medical marijuana is still legal

1970

The Controlled Substances Act makes all marijuana illegal (including medical), but removes mandatory sentencing; Cannabis is officially classified a Schedule 1 drug

1978

The Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) Program, a federally sponsored medical marijuana program, starts and officially accepts 15 patients

1978-1982

Several states are allowed to start providing medical marijuana through federally-approved programs

1991

San Francisco County passes a resolution for police to not prosecute people who are using marijuana with a doctor's reccomendation

1996

Medical marijuana is officially legalized in CA; Arizona also passes a medical marijuana ballot, but it is rendered ineffective due to a technicality

1998

Medical Marijuana is legalized in Alaska, Oregon, and Washington

1999

Medical marijuana is legalized in Maine

2000

Medical marijuana is legalized in Colorado, Hawaii, and Nevada

2004

Medical marijuana is legalized in Montanta and Vermont

2006

Medical marijuana is legalized in Rhode Island

2007

Medical marijuana is legalized in New Mexico

2008

Medical marijuana is legalized in Michigan

2009

Medical marijuana is legalized in New Jersey

2010

Medical marijuana is legalized in Washington DC and Arizona (because the 1996 AZ ballot was ineffective)

2011

Medical marijuana is legalized in Delaware

2012

Colorado and Washington become the first states to legalize Recreational marijuana; Medical marijuana is legalized in Connecticut and Massachusetts

2013

Medical marijuana is legalized in Illinois and New Hampshire

2014

Recreational marijuana is legalized in Alsask, Oregon, and Washington DC; Medical marijuana is legalized in Maryland, Minnesota, and New York

2016

Recreational marijuana is legalized in California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada; Medical marijuana is legalized in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, North Dakota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania

2017

Medical marijuana is legalized in West Virginia

2018

Recreational marijuana is legalized in Michigan and Vermont; Medical marijuana is legalized in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Utah

2019

Recreational marijuana is legalized in Illinois
